"The retainer's budget line was created last month," he said. "INDEPENDENT RESEARCH CAPACITY: forty-eight thousand pounds. Originally earmarked for a follow-up to Marian's audit." He put the page down. "It's her money. They're offering you her salary to stop asking how she died."
"Strand isn't covering up a murder," you said. "She's tidying a budget. It's worse in a way. Nobody has to decide anything wicked."
