A Voss and Pike Casefile: The Early Days
Section 29: The Key Log
The site log was in a hard-backed book, neat as a drawing. QUAY EDGE: no railing, lamps off, HAZARD, three times in four weeks, three stamps: noted. His movements from nine till six were written down to the minute, and for a stretch from 23:15 to 23:50 he'd written PHONE (Mama, Gdansk). The cabin camera confirmed it. The call log said thirty-four minutes. He hadn't left the cabin.
"The police didn't ask for the camera," said Darek. "They asked me where I was and then wrote it down as if I'd said something else."
Darek's log records three hazard reports about the unfenced quay, each stamped "noted", and an unbroken alibi - a thirty-four-minute call with his mother, confirmed by the cabin camera - that nobody investigating the "foreign lad with the keys" had thought to check.
